Students in my Anthropology/Archeology class took a trip to the Old School Museum to learn about Winchester's rich pre-historic and historic past. Students undertook a scavenger hunt in the museum, and then went below to the basement where they conducted a lab. The basement houses a large collection of archeologically recovered stoneware. The stoneware was manufactured nearby at the George Ebey and Thomas Kilpatrick kiln site sometime around 1838-1840 and was excavated by myself (Dr. Claire Coonrod) several years ago in conjunction with the museum. As part of the lab, students sorted and analyzed stoneware fragments, creating an inventory and a minimum vessel count of their particular sample.
